About Smart

Smart cars are designed with the urban commuter in mind. Tired of the usual array of subcompact cars? There are cars that are small enough to fit in the tightest of parking spaces and the smart would have to be one of them. Smart began in 1993 and is the result of a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Swatch, the watchmaker from Switzerland. The car was never about the looks or the performance. The goal was to provide a comfortable mode of transport that is super economical to run.

For the price of $12,490, the smart pure coupe offers an extensive array of standard equipment such as a two spoke leather steering wheel, hill start assist, stability control, 15-inch wheels and power accessories. Power comes from a Mitsubishi-sourced three-cylinder 1.0-liter engine that produces a modest 70hp and 68 lb-ft of torque. While the stats may sound unconvincing from a performance point of view, keep in mind that the smart pure coupe has only two seats compared to the usual four or five-seat subcompact. The smart is also lightweight and helps the engine achieve a phenomenal 41mpg on the highway.

The smart passion coupe is decidedly sportier and a little more expensive than the base pure coupe. For the price of $15,690 for the smart passion coupe, buyer gets 15-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning with climate control, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, a glass roof and paddle shifters for the transmission. Further options include daytime LED running lights, heated seats, and an alarm system.

If you want a convertible soft top in a smart car then the passion cabriolet is right for you. This will allow you to relish the sights and the sounds of the outdoors while still doing your part in saving the environment.
